BACKGROUND

"Salcura" is the registered trademark for the natural skin therapy products, vitamins and supplements manufactured by Bioskin International Ltd. Our activities are centred around the research and development of new, unique and very specific diagnostics, natural healthcare supplements and biomedical skincare products aimed at providing competitive, exceptionally effective, environmentally harmonious and user-friendly solutions to a variety of technological and health care challenges, using only the finest natural ingredients which are sourced worldwide.

Based in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, on the east coast of England, the company was founded by Dr. Martin Schiele, a biomedical research scientist by profession. The products are the result of many years of research both in the UK and Europe and we continue to work with our colleagues in Europe to ensure that our products benefit from the latest scientific research and that they are fully tested and validated. As a company we value greatly the work of our ancestors in creating effective treatments from totally natural substances and we continue to learn from them. Whilst respecting these philosophies, we also apply modern scientific methods in evaluating and testing our products and in ensuring strict quality control procedures. We see natural healthcare education as a priority. For example, we not only list the ingredients of our products but explain in our literature why they are useful to our bodies, thus promoting a wider understanding of the natural world.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

As an integral part of our research and development programme, we work with scientists from around the world to ensure that the latest developments and techniques are incorporated into our products.

Research work has taken place over a number of years to ensure our ingredients are effective and safe using safety analysers. We take the view that one active ingredient in isolation will not be as effective as a combination of specific, carefully chosen ingredients which complement each other. Consequently a very intensive and complicated formulation programme is tried and tested in order to ensure that all the ingredients work synergetically with each other and that they have the highest quality and safety standards in line with European regulations.

In addition, tests such as those for bacteria, chemical and thermal stability and determination of shelf life together with other appropriate tests are carried out. When these have been completed, the products are sent to a volunteer "Test Group" for feedback. Only when we are fully satisfied that our products are effective and of the highest quality do we bring them to market.

Latex Allergy Types I and IV

Prevention & Treatment

Latex allergy has recently been in the news both in the UK and in the USA. Healthcare workers and others are successfully winning substantial damages from employers and glove manufacturers for their failure to protect latex glove wearers. There are hundreds of cases pending and compensation judgements are rising fast. In a landmark case in the UK £354,000 was awarded to an NHS trust employee (November 2002). These types of cases have consequences not only for the NHS, but for industry as a whole, because employers will no longer be able to argue that they did not know that a substance was harmful. But the good news is that there is a prophylaxis and treatment available now from Salcura.

In the USA judgements in favour of individuals have topped $5 million (April 2001). Up until now there has been no effective prophylaxis and therapy for latex allergy (Types I & IV) sufferers beyond avoidance of the material – which is not always practical or possible.

A unique product has been developed by Bioskin International Ltd to act as a prevention and treatment for types I & IV – Salcura Professional Skin Therapy with LIS – Latex Inactivating Solution. LIS is designed to destroy the latex allergens that cause latex allergy by targeted inactivation of these allergens. As a result the latex allergens are no longer able to react with the specific IgE antibodies which are responsible for the allergic reaction. In addition, the Salcura Professional Skin Therapy Range with LIS can prevent formation of such antibodies in non-allergenic persons. There are two formulations in the Salcura with LIS product range: one is for prevention and the other is for the treatment of latex allergen associated and induced skin problems.

PRODUCTION

Our products are produced to the highest standards to ensure the best possible quality and effectiveness. The ingredients are carefully mixed in the correct proportions for each product and then bottled using special filling equipment. Even the bottles have been carefully chosen to ensure that the products have a shelf life of two years if stored as directed. The bottles are environmentally friendly in two ways. Firstly, they have a high quality pump spray (not aerosol) which distributes the correct amount of solution to the affected area and secondly all our bottles are biodegradable.

Spot checks are carried out on each batch during the production process and samples taken for testing, with a record kept of each batch. Finally, our labels quote full directions for use together with a full list of ingredients under the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) regulations. Our contact details are also printed on the labels for further advice or guidance if necessary.

THE INGREDIENTS AND HOW THEY WORK

Each of our products has different carefully chosen ingredients such as natural oils, vitamins, minerals, agents and carriers, all of which are used in various proportions to form a colloidal solution. The advantage of a colloidal solution over creams, dusting powders, ointments and pastes is that it allows a naturally regulated and balanced absorption, a naturally regulated balanced distribution and a naturally regulated balanced action of all vital and active ingredients.

In chemical terms, a solution is a homogenous mixture of different sorts of molecules. The criteria for homogeneity is that two or more different types of molecules are thoroughly mixed with one another. Solutions are usually thought of as solids dissolved in liquids. For a solution to form, there must be an interaction between the substances which dissolve (solute) and the material it dissolves in (solvent).

One of the more important properties of a solution is its ability to exert osmotic pressure. This process is called osmosis and is a diffusion of a solvent through a semi-permeable membrane into a more concentrated solution. Osmosis is a vital cellular process and is crucial to living organisms. For example, plant roots absorb water by osmosis and the walls of living cells use it selectively to allow the passage of required substances. Plants and animals are also responsible for producing complex substances that form colloidal solutions.

It is crucial that the active ingredients are made available to the skin in the most effective way and our research has shown that a colloidal solution is more beneficial in this respect than traditional creams and ointments. By penetrating the pores of the skin, working down through the various layers of the skin and then back up to the surface by osmosis, the active ingredients in our sprays are immediately bio-available and consequently are extremely effective.

Our sprays consist of active ingredients and carriers and both are important in the treatment of skin conditions. It is being increasingly recognised that the carrier alone may have more than a placebo effect, since it influences the degree of hydration of the skin, has a mild anti-inflammatory effect and aids the penetration of the active ingredients.
