Sheen Instruments – the measure of success

Despite all the excitement generated by the technology and features in new cars, it is often the look and feel that has most influence over the final buying decision.

Performance, value for money, gadgets and gismos are key when it comes to buying with the head, but many buyers follow their hearts and that means quality, sensory feel and overall appearance.

Making the vehicle feel and look a quality item whilst controlling production costs is a finely tuned balance.

That's where Sheen Instruments (www.sheeninstruments.com) can help.

Master plaques are often made from materials, which differ from those supplied to vehicles in production. Sheen manufactures a wide range of testing equipment designed to standardise measurements to enable conformity to a customer's specifications.

Where multiple angle gloss readings are required, such as with very low sheen products, the 'GlossMaster' range of gloss meters offer a range of instruments which can measure up to three degrees of gloss simultaneously – 20, 60 and 85.

For smaller more complex items like gearshift levers, control buttons, windscreen wipers etc. there is the Microgloss 60 SO.

The Microgloss 60 has two versions, a normal and a mirror gloss version with a measurement area of 2 x 2 mm. A bench top model is also available with a foot switch and holding clamps for times when more complex items need to be held.

Dampness in a car's interior can play havoc with new laid carpets leading to customer complaints. For checking dampness, the Protimeter hand held range of meters enables a quick in-vehicle check for peace of mind.

Scratch testing

Interior coatings are also subject to damage so a simple test involving the Sheen Scratch tester REF 705 series will provide a repeatable finger nail test to minimise costly in-service failures.

Exterior components such as bumpers also need testing to ensure that the paint remains intact and the use of the cross hatch cutter will quickly identify any adhesion concerns.

Where variable and much thinner films are being applied, the Microtest range offers versatile probes and data manipulation, especially useful for small and complex sub components.

For Corrosion testing of coatings on small automotive parts, such as fasteners, the use of accelerated weathering equipment, such as Salt, Humidity and Cyclic corrosion test cabinets are specified in order to ensure maximum product life under severe conditions.

Our range of Fogmaster corrosion cabinets have been designed to provide advanced testing solutions, offered in a range of capacities from 250 to 1000 litres and conform to all major international test specifications

For many years we have successfully installed our range of automatic panel sprayers in numerous automotive paint producers and end users.

These versatile machines allow a coating to be applied reproducibly each time matching the spraying conditions in a production or refinish process.

As these machines are completely pneumatic in operation and intrinsically safe they can be used in areas where flammable solvent based paint systems are present.
