From its original pioneering activities in strapping 95 years ago, to its present day global scale of operation, Signode stands unique in the field of packaging technology.
Now part of multi-billion dollar ITW Group, itself a true global giant operating in over 826 companies world wide, Signode combines its unequalled strapping and packaging experience with the significant financial resources of ITW, to provide its customers with a globally delivered provision of sales, service application engineering support and market knowledge that is simply unmatched in strapping systems.
A long term Signode strategy has been to establish specialisation within major industry areas, to ensure customers always have ready access to engineers, knowledgeable with their own industry demands and requirements.
Over 20 years ago, Signode created a ‘Knowledge Centre’ in Germany, specifically for the non-ferrous metals industry. As the company developed in this area, it identified the Aluminium Industry as a prime market to benefit from the technological advances being made by Signode with PET strapping.
Working closely with internationally renowned organisations, Signode successfully pioneered the change from steel strapping to polyester strap, using its own development, TENAX® engineered PET strap, using a wide range of test procedures - including globally organised arrival inspections - to prove that TENAX® provided the optimum solution for packaging aluminium.
Intrinsically safe, with zero surface corrosion, plus a much better pack appearance and tightly strapped loads – even when the pack cools or settles - are just some of the benefits of using TENAX®. That TENAX® is a more economical packaging material adds to its appeal still further.
TENAX® is much tougher than steel strap! A 32mm x 1.27mm TENAX® strap requires 11½ times more energy to break the strap (compared with High Tensile Steel) and an amazing 18 ¾ times more energy to break than standard steel strap. Who said plastic could not be tougher than steel!
The benefits of using Signode TENAX® polyester strap are many and extremely varied.
Retained tension is superior to any other polyester strap on the market, meaning the load is always secure because the straps are always tight – even if pack cooling or settling occurs.
TENAX® is resistant to U/V deterioration, so it can be stored in bright sunlight with no adverse effects on performance. Likewise, extreme cold temperatures do not affect its long-term tension performance either!
To get maximum benefit from TENAX®, Signode has developed a range of highly efficient application equipment. The AK200HD range is highly suitable for billets ingots, slab, coils and sheets and can be used with 19mm and 25mm TENAX®, whilst the slightly de-rated AK200 range works with 16mm to 19mm TENAX®.
Later in 2008, the AK200 HDX will be introduced and this machine will have the capability to apply 25mm to 32mm heavy duty TENAX® polyester strap.
The AK200 range already has over 1000 strapping heads working successfully throughout the world and is the culmination of Signode technology for steel, polyprop and polyester strapping. In total, nearly 2700 AK based strapping systems have been installed globally.
Signode remains committed to the aluminium industry and seeks to develop ever more efficient packaging systems. Low cost of ownership, max. uptime and maximum productivity potential are core values at the heart of a company that came into being 95 years ago to develop innovative packaging solutions for industry.
Thankfully, some things don’t change.
