Sunland International School is an independent school located just outside of the City of Malaga in the Guadalhorce Valley. The school currently enrols pupils representing 17 nationalities aged 2 ½ - 13 and is adding one year group annually.

Sunland is set on a spectacular 4 hectare campus in the foothills to the northwest of Malaga providing an attractive and secure environment for families seeking a holistic education for their children. The facilities, which include a combination of original buildings of rural character and modern purpose-built buildings, contain bright and cheerful primary and secondary classrooms in addition to specialist rooms and laboratories for music, art and design technology, science, ICT and Library. The grounds feature areas for basketball, soccer and other sports, a swimming pool, outdoor adventure facilities, a small school farm, a duck pond and an orchard.

Class sizes range up to 26 pupils and, where appropriate, teaching assistants are provided. The men and women who work at Sunland all have Spanish or UK qualifications and some, including the Head of School and divisional heads, have previous international school experience.

Founded in 2001, Sunland is recognised by the British Council and the Spanish Ministry of Education, and currently follows the English National Curriculum and the required Spanish Language and Conocimiento del Medio courses (taught in Spanish). The primary section is now in the process of adapting its programme to a model prescribed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and has begun the process to seek permission to implement and seek authorisation for the Primary Years Programme from the IBO. The Secondary School follows the Keystage 3 and will introduce the International General Secondary Certificate of Education at the appropriate time. The School’s goal is then to introduce the IB Diploma programme, which is well suited to our multinational students who will seek university entry in Spain, the UK and elsewhere.

Part of the School’s educational offering is the lunch programme. Freshly prepared nutritious three-course meals are served daily in the Comedor (dining room). Pupils are seated family-style with a teacher at the head of each small table. In this way pupils are encouraged engage in appropriate social conversation and interaction.

The school day is enhanced by the provision of optional extra-curricular activities which typically include a mixture of sports, dance, music, and language and literacy pursuits such as French Club or the Library Club, providing pupils with an opportunity to develop their athletic skills or explore new interests.

Through the Friends of Sunland, parents are able to find meaningful ways to become involved in, and support the life of, the School. Through such activities, parents become more aware of day-to-day life at Sunland, and are able to help with visits to classrooms, or by volunteering in the library, and by helping the school find useful ways of engaging in the local Spanish community. A recent initiative for parents has been the introduction of Spanish conversation classes for parents. Sunland is committed to developing good communications and working partnerships with parents.

Sunland offers a bus service with routes coming from places such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Malaga, and the Alhaurins. The Schools is conveniently located to Malaga Airport and the Parque Tecnologico de Andalucia, Spain’s most state-of-the-art Technology Park.

Sunland International School is also a member of the Council of European Schools (CIS), the European Council of International Schools (ECIS). The School is committed to using these membership organisations to keep abreast of the latest developments in educational practice in Britain and elsewhere.
