Tesco Pharmacy

Tesco opened its first in-store pharmacy in 1989. Today Tesco is the largest supermarket pharmacy service in the UK with over 240 Tesco Pharmacies throughout the UK, serving millions of customers each week.

Pharmacy is one of the key services that Tesco offers its customers. Providing convenience, value-for-money and an excellent range of healthcare products and services, it is an integral and valued part of the shopping experience.

With long opening hours, getting expert healthcare advice or collecting prescription medicines couldn’t be more convenient for customers. Tesco Pharmacies are open seven days a week, usually between 9am to 8pm on weekdays and Saturdays and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Many of the newer pharmacies are actually open for one hundred hours each week.

As well as dispensing NHS and private prescriptions, a variety of healthcare services are also available including; Medicine Use Review, Health Check, Repeat Prescription Collection, Quit Smoking Support, disposal of unwanted medicines, travel advice, maternity tens machine rental, Tesco diets subscriptions and healthy lifestyle advice.

All Tesco Pharmacies have private consulting areas so customers can discuss health issues or concerns in confidence with the pharmacist.

A ‘Medicine Use Review’ is available to any customer taking regular medication to help them better understand the medicines they are taking and what they are actually taking them for. This service encourages compliance and helps our pharmacists develop links with local GPs and other healthcare practitioners.

January 2008 saw the launch of the Health Check service. An easy and effective way to stay on top of your health, the service assesses your current health and provides a check on whether you are at risk of developing health problems in the future.

The four-in-one Health Check comprises: weight management, blood pressure check, total cholesterol check and diabetes screening. Results are available immediately and are explained by the pharmacist who will also provide appropriate lifestyle advice and guidance on any next steps you might need to take. The pharmacist will explain what is normal and what the results mean as well as how to reduce the risk factors such as smoking and being overweight. A typical appointment lasts approximately 30 minutes. (See in-store for current price).

Tesco Pharmacies also participate in a wide range of services commissioned locally by Primary Care Trusts, where these are available. These range from smoking cessation services to ‘minor ailments schemes’, depending on the local needs.

Tesco Pharmacy is integral to the company’s wider corporate commitment to healthy living. The “Tesco Healthy Living” brand was re-launched in January 2008 and, to support this, there is a ‘Healthy Living’ Tesco website. The pharmacy section of the website includes details of the many information booklets available in-store and also information about where to find the nearest Tesco Pharmacy. In addition, it has a useful “Ask Your Pharmacist” section where questions, frequently asked of pharmacists, are answered.

All together the pharmacy offering within Tesco stores and online fits perfectly with the corporate ethos of “Every Little Helps”.

The range of different healthcare products and services available at Tesco Pharmacy makes it easier for everyone to handle everyday health problems and get instant support and advice when they need it.
