On the 12th of July, 1957, Tu-104 jet with hull No L5419 took off from the runway and made for Moscow. This first passenger flight was a benchmark in airport "Tolmachevo" history.

Now it’s the biggest airport that make up the five basic airports of Russia.

The advantageous geographical position of Novosibirsk – a large industrial, scientific and cultural centre in the very centre of Russia, status of Russian President Representative in the Siberian Federal region, concentration of a different regional departments, branches of various federal and departmental bodies, "Siberian Fair", which runs constantly, and the world renowned Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences made it possible for Tolmachevo to become the air gateway of Novosibirsk and the Region, the intermediate point of technical and commercial landing and aircraft handling on the Trans-Siberian route.

In 1992 the airport acquired international status and is now a member of Airports Council International in the European region.

It handles flights from more than 80 Russian cities and is becoming ever more popular with Russian, CIS and foreign airlines. 23 leading airlines have representative offices here:

  • Aeroflot - Russian Airlines
  • Transaero
  • Air Ukraine
  • Armenian Airlines
  • Uzbekistan Airlines
  • China Xinjiang Airlines and others.

The air route via Tolmachevo is one of the most convenient and economically advantageous intercontinental air communications, connecting Europe with the countries of South and South-Eastern Asia.

Tolmachevo airport was initially planned to handle domestic passengers of the former USSR. The peak of its activities in this market was in the early nineties, when the airport handled annually up to 4.5 million passengers. Then, certain changes appeared in the structure of passenger flow in recent years. The economic situation of the airport in 2001 is characterized by an increase in passenger traffic compared to 2000. The general passenger flow was 1096.4 thousand passengers or 73.4 thousand more than was planned.

The airport has a Category 1 Certificate in accordance with ICAO. The airport today is well-equipped technically:

  • its runway can accept all types of aircrafts;
  • with a centralized refuelling system complying with the European standards.

The runway capacity is 18 take offs/landings per hour. On the apron there are 60 parking lots for all types of aircrafts, where they are technically handled.

There is a passenger terminal with a total area of 15.4 thousand square meters (capacity is 1000 passengers per hour) for the passenger service in airport. Modern equipped international passenger terminal with the total area of 2.3 thousand square meters and a capacity of 450 passengers per hour was commissioned in 1997.

VIP and business halls as well as the high comfort hall for transfer passengers make for a cosy atmosphere.

Nowadays a domestic passenger terminal is under reconstruction and airport land side modernization is still continuing, as well as completion of the 2nd runway equipped with radio-navigation and landing facilities. It would allow to increase sufficiently the amount of passenger and cargo traffic and passenger service quality as well.

In 1995 airport became an Open Joint–Stock Company (OJSC) "Airport "Tolmachevo". 51% of its shares belong to the Ministry of Property Relations of Russia.

The main objective of Tolmachevo airport for the nearest project is to create a development concept of airport up to the year 2010.

In April 2002 The Board of Directors OJSC "Airport "Tolmachevo" named the tender winner – it is a "Vneshaudit-PACC-Obermeier" company.

The future of Airport Tolmachevo development as a major traffic junction of Russia depends on the development concept creation.
