Vantaa - Logistics Excellence with Business Park Approach
Vantaa
is an entrepreneur-oriented city neighbouring to the north of Helsinki. An
important prerequisite of the success of Vantaa has been the rapid
development of Helsinki - Vantaa Airport. The construction of the third
runway has began and will be ready by 2003. This allows passenger numbers to
increase considerably. Being the home-base for one of the world's best
airports and an important cross-road for main highways of Finland, the city
of Vantaa is a natural logistics hub. Vantaa is involved in many projects,
where logistics expertise is a key issue. The port of Helsinki is only a 15
- 30 minutes drive away from Vantaa.
Many prominent companies have their distribution or other units in
Vantaa. For example, Finland's Post new distribution centre, many smaller
logistics companies and a big mail order retailer Hobby Hall. TNT, DHL, UPS,
Bauhaus, IKEA etc. have also located in close proximity to the airport.
Several years ago Vantaa, together with enterprises, started to envisage
the business opportunities near Helsinki - Vantaa Airport. Today dozens of
concrete projects can be seen now in the concept Vantaa Airport City. The
latest proof of this is the co-operation of Vantaa City with Technopolis,
the foremost science-park in Finland, which will also have a presence in
Vantaa. The Helsinki metropolitan area houses more than 40% of Finland's
high-tech industry, which is choosing increasingly to locate in the vicinity
of the airport. The largest single project within the Airport Alliance is
AVIAPOLIS. In the future, the floor area will total approximately almost 500
000 square meters and provide 10 000 jobs. The main developers in the Vantaa
Airport City are the Finnish Civil Aviation Administration, Skanska, SRV,
YIT, NCC, ABB, Polar, Sponda and CM-Urakointi.
Skanska has finished the first phase of its innovative "Securite Valley",
YIT a business park AVIA FORUM and developer NCC AIRPORT PLAZA. LEIJA, a
new-generation complex of corporations in the environmental and food
technology industries is built in the Vantaanportti business park near to
the Helsinki - Vantaa airport. The LEIJA environmental complex consists of a
nucleus including the Vantaa Environmental Agency and satellites, comprising
offices, production and laboratory facilities. The Environment Agency also
provides laboratory facilities that are available to all companies. LEIJA
offers a flexible and well-rounded operating environment to companies
seeking the synergy of the Environment Agency and the other companies
clustered around the nearby airport. GREEN NET is situated in Leija.
