History

The Brno University of Technology is one of the oldest universities in the Czech Republic. Its origin dates back to 1849 when a German-Czech Technical School was established in Brno. A Czech Technical University was founded in Brno when the Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1899 by a decree of Kaiser Franz Joseph I.

After 1989 academic freedom returned to the University. In 1992 the Faculty of Business and Management and the Faculty of Chemistry were established. One year later the Faculty of Fine Arts came into being and the name of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was changed into the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In 1999 the name Brno University of Technology was introduced. In 2001 the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was devided into the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication and Faculty of Information Technology.

Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering was re-established in 1959, and in 1993 was renamed to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science to reflect the enormous growth of computers and their applications. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was transformed into the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC) and the Faculty of Information Technologies (FIT) was established on the 1st January 2002.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication provides education in Electronics and Communication, Cybernetics, Control and Measurement Techniques, Microelectronics and Technology, Power Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Teleinformatics.

The Faculty consists of 12 Departments with about 180 teachers, 190 PhD. students and more as 2 700 students in Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral study programs. The quality of teaching is guaranteed by accreditation procedures, at the national level by the Ministry of Education, and at the European Association for Education FEANI as well.

The Faculty provides education in Electronics and Communication, Automation and Measurement Techniques, Microelectronics and Technology, Power Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Teleinformatics, Telecommunication and Informatics, Biomedical and Ecologic Engineering, Electrical Manufacturing and Management.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering carries on the long-standing tradition of higher technical education in Brno. Teaching at the Faculty started in the academic year 1900/01, only to be interrupted by World War II. The independent Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1959. The year 1986 was another milestone in its history - the Faculty moved to the newly constructed campus.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the second largest faculty of the Brno University of Technology, having nearly 4.000 students. The Faculty provides education in the field of mechanical engineering in three main areas - manufacturing technology, design and applied sciences. With respect to modern trends in engineering, the Faculty has introduced new study areas, for example materials engineering, mathematical and physical engineering, mechatronic or industrial design.

From its very foundation, the Faculty was built as a school of modern conception, open to technical progress and cooperation with industry. Compared with other faculties of mechanical engineering in the Czech Republic, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the most efficient in the area of external grant projects.

Researchers, teachers and students are involved in more than 160 grant projects, with close connection to many research institutes and industrial companies.

The Faculty provides education in the field of mechanical engineering in three main areas - manufacturing technology, design and applied sciences. The Faculty has introduced new study areas, for example materials engineering, mathematical and physical engineering, mechatronic or industrial design.
