WAVEGEN

- OCEANS OF POWER

The era of wave power has arrived. WAVEGEN is harnessing the monumental power of the world’s oceans to provide sustainable, pollution-free energy generation.

As world leaders of commercial wave powered electrical generation technology, WAVEGEN has pioneered the research, development and manufacture of several innovative marine power systems.

Established in 1990, by Professor Alan Wells FRS inventor of the Wells Turbine, WAVEGEN has developed a range of energy modules for clients to exploit the unlimited wave energy resources in the shoreline, near shore and offshore environments.

In addition to providing cost effective local power generation, WAVEGEN’s devices can be applied to desalination, coastal protection, aquaculture and sustainable local maritime economic regeneration. The company also offers a full consultancy service, combining staff who have unrivaled expertise in the area with excellent in-house facilities including a wave tank and full engineering science support.

 Products Include:

  • LIMPET 0.5MW shoreline wave power station, for local or island power generation and port development
  • OSPREY 2MW nearshore gravity anchored wave power station, for regional power generation and coastal protection
  • WOSP 3.5MW near-shore combined wave and wind station
  • OFFSHORE multi MW floating wave stations

Wavegen’s OSPREY and LIMPET units are capable of generating electricity at a price that is competitive with fossil-fuelled power stations and other renewables.

The Islay ‘LIMPET 500’ Project:

WAVEGEN is constructing the world’s first commercial scale wave energy plant to be connected to the grid.

WAVEGEN’s 0.5MW shoreline energy device, the LIMPET (Land Installed Marine Powered Energy Transformer), developed following several years collaboration with Queen’s University of Belfast, will be installed on the Scottish island of Islay.

The Future:

"If less than 0.1% of the renewable energy within the oceans could be converted into electricity it would satisfy the present world demand for energy more than five times over."
